Brand me not!

Some lines from Cat Stevens’ ‘Wild World’ is probably playing at the top of your parents’ minds when they send you off on your first day of high school/college. That’s because they are sure in most cases you will return the very day and ask for a wardrobe overhaul! Oh, the influence of the wild world! After all, the most ‘in’ clothes are displayed in groups hanging in and around high schools and colleges.

A traditional people at core, we generally do not really go for ‘brands’ in all our clothes but we do have the tendency to give in to the lure of owning at least one pair (or two, three or a half a dozen) of branded jeans. As most girls these days will be proud to display, brands such as Levis, Wranglers, Pepes and Lee Coopers are the way to go. Other well fitting jeans and corduroys do get our vote though. After all, something that fits you well and is comfortable is more important than the brand. Team these jeans with any tee – usually picked up from the roadside but more often than not, another branded one and a cool bag, and you are all set to go rock the college. Shoes are where most high school/college girls are particular. A brand well recognised such as Nike, Reebok or Adidas and most often Caterpillar and Lee Copper is almost always visible on campus.

Another trend currently doing the rounds, undoubtedly, is teaming your prized jeans, trailing the dust on the ground, with a trendy kurta and either the Osho chappals or cork slippers (easily available at any of your favourite shopping haunts). Get on a jhola and you are ready to go set the world on fire with the ‘journalist look’. Also, long bright coloured skirts brushing your ankles with a trendy kurta style top and chappals are doing the rounds more often than not.

As for accessories, girls today use chunky, oxidised dangling earrings and matching or similar chains and rings. These are again easily available at your favourite roadside jewellery guy somewhere near school/college. There is no need for the more expensive stuff, as it’s really out of sync with the high school/college look.

All in all, you don’t have to spend a bomb on looking good. A mix and match style is what works best almost all the time, has been so through the years mark our words, and no one needs to know about the brands you wear or not!
